Just 20 minutes from the Morgan's Rock Hacienda and Ecolodge, on the road connecting San Juan del Sur with Rivas, there is a small school that we have decided to help achieve higher educational standards and help improve their infrastructure. The first guests that we have taken there were very impressed with the children's dedication and especially grateful that the students had prepared poems for them. This was their way of saying thank you for bringing the very needed school supplies like books, pencils and other learning materials.

The school was built through a donation and is part of the Nicaraguan school system. Two teachers take care of 66 students from grade 1 to 6. There are almost no books, no games and teaching is made difficult for the teachers that are very motivated, despite of the low pay they receive from the government (less than $100 a month). School hours are from 12 noon to 4 pm. Before the classes were in the morning, but not many children were able to come due to the fact that they are all walking to school from significant distances.
If you would like to help this school, please bring learning materials and books (preferably in Spanish) and we will be happy to take you there so you can make the donation personally. We have just started the support for this school in early November 2004, but hope to improve the situation for the students and teachers significantly by Spring 2005.
