When to Visit Morgan’s Rock: Best Time to Experience Nicaragua’s Pacific Coast

Pristine sandy beach by rocky cliffs and green forest under a cloudy sky near Morgan's Rock Reserve & Ecolodge

Choosing when to visit Morgan’s Rock can shape your entire experience. Nicaragua’s Pacific coast has two main seasons – dry and green – and each brings a different mood to the forest and the beach.

The Climate in a Nutshell
On the Pacific side of Nicaragua, including the area around San Juan del Sur:

  • Dry season: roughly November to April
  • Green (rainy) season: roughly May to October

In the dry season you can expect plenty of sun and very little rain. During the green season you’ll see more showers, especially later in the day, and a much lusher landscape.

Dry Season (November–April): Sunshine and Clear Skies
The dry season is the safest bet if you’re looking for classic beach weather.

  • November & December: the forest is still green after the rains, with clearer skies and more comfortable humidity.
  • January to March: the sunniest, driest months – ideal for swimming, kayaking, horseback riding and long days on the beach.
  • April: still dry but usually warmer, perfect if you enjoy heat and bright days.

Best for:

  • First-time visitors to Nicaragua
  • Sun-seekers, honeymooners and beach lovers
  • Guests planning to combine Morgan’s Rock with other destinations in the country

Green Season (May–October): Lush, Quiet and Atmospheric
From May onwards, rain returns and the forest around Morgan’s Rock turns an even deeper shade of green.

  • May & June: the transition into green season, with showers but also long dry windows, especially in the mornings.
  • July & August: very lush and vibrant; a favorite for travelers who don’t mind some rain and enjoy softer light and quieter beaches.
  • September & October: often the wettest period, with heavier and more frequent showers, but also dramatic skies and very few crowds.

Best for:

  • Nature and photography lovers
  • Travelers looking for better value and more availability
  • Guests who enjoy cozy time in their bungalow or villa when the rain comes in

Sea Turtles and Wildlife
One of the most special experiences at Morgan’s Rock is seeing sea turtles on the lodge’s protected beach. Nesting and hatching can occur at different times of the year, but activity is often stronger in the later part of the green season.
Wildlife – like howler monkeys, birds and other forest animals – can be seen year-round. In the green season, the forest is especially alive, while in the dry months visibility on some trails can be easier.
If sea turtles are high on your wish list, it’s worth asking the reservations team about current patterns before you book.
